Korpo – a pearl in the archipelago
Korpo is a great island with many attractions including the famous Korpo old church from the 15th century named S:t Mikaelskyrkan. Korpoström is an old harbour and a marketplace at the southernmost point of the island, which today also host a restaurant and hotel. Quite close is the Rumar village, with another restaurant at Rumar Strand. Both restaurants are in the summer frequently visited by the Korpo Whiskey Society members.
The Korpo-Nagu archipelago is probably the most favorite place for Finns in the southern parts of the country to have a summer cottage in, as well as a popular tourist destination, as the archipelago in itself is one of the jewels in the Finnish nature. In the summer months the population rises considerably and increasingly also people consider moving out to the archipelago permanently, as new houses built these days are fully up for year-around standard and living.
The Korpo-Nagu islands belong to the City of Pargas, so come and visit and experience a way of city life you can not experience anywhere else. Korpo is also very close to the demilitarized zone covering the Åland Islands between the Finnish archipelago, mainland and Sweden. The island is also famous for its Gyltö garrison island, where the Finnish Defence Forces have today a lot of international exercises and the Border guard station island Fagerholm, with its “White House” from 1728, that give all ships arriving from Europe to Finland a warm and long welcome, as it can be seen already in excess of one hour before ships finally pass it. The island is still heavily armed and is for instance equipped with the same surveillance systems that guard effectively all Russian boarders, except to China, as both the Finnish Defence Forces and Boarder Guards have full access and use of the Island. These islands are naturally restricted areas, so you can not visit them without an invitation and a formal screening and acceptance.
